The importance of events like Game Devs of Color Expo
As mentioned earlier, 2022 marks seven years of the Game Devs of Color Expo, an event meant to highlight games created by color game developers that would otherwise be overlooked.
It has since grown to also host POC-led talks, interviews, and panels in order to educate others about the realities of indie development, as well as promote discussions of storytelling and character development from a POC perspective.
There’s even an awards ceremony, where at least $90,000 in development grants will be awarded, including the $15,000 Made in NY Grant and the Game Devs of Color Expo Grant. The last of which will go to three color developers, each receiving $25,000.
The Game Devs of Color Expo has become such a valuable and vital event that it gives the POC the media exposure and funding they would never have received in such a white-centric industry. And I hope it can continue to grow and help even more color developers in the future, and continue to set a precedent for a fairer future for the gaming industry.
