Apple usually releases a bunch of new products at the end of each year, but it looks like the iPhone 14 may have more than its fair share of gadget companions, according to a big name in Apple leaks.
This comes from Mark Gurman, in his weekly Turn on (opens in new tab) newsletter about upcoming Apple news and rumors. Gurman mentions many products that are expected to be released “between the fall of 2022 and the first half of 2023” – or Apple’s peak period.
Chief among these is the iPhone 14, with Gurman saying there will be four models – we’ve heard this many times from leakers, with the expected lineup consisting of the standard model, plus an iPhone 14 Max, Pro and Pro Max.
A lot of the other information provided about upcoming iPhone Pro models are things we’ve already heard about, like its always-on display, high-res rear camera, and improved front camera – but the non-Pro versions are reportedly weaker.
Next up is the AirPods Pro 2, though all Gurman says is “I’m also expecting new AirPods Pro headphones with an updated chip and support for high-quality audio”, so there’s not much information on them.
Apple is said to be releasing new iPad Pros for 2022 that come with the new M2 chipsets – Gurman says there will be 11-inch and 12.9-inch versions, but addresses rumors of a larger 14-inch saying that could come in the future. next year or so.
That’s not all at the iPad party though, as a new entry-level iPad (2022) is equipped with 5G, a new chipset and a USB-C port – that’s all we’ve heard before.
As the headline says, more smartwatches are also expected, and it’s not just the high-end Apple Watch 8 (although not many changes are expected for that device).
Nope, a new Apple Watch SE 2 has been announced, as well as a beefy version of the standard model aimed at extreme sports users.
Gurman also lists many new Macs that are emerging using various versions of the M2 chipsets, with MacBooks and Mac Minis expected.
Finally, Gurman points to a ‘mixed reality’ headset using the M2 chip and 16GB of RAM, something fans were hoping to hear at WWDC 2022 (Apple’s annual mid-year tech launch) that never debuted.
Review: A major iPhone 14 release?
Let’s recap what we just heard:
- Four iPhone 14s
- Three Apple Watches
- Various iPad family updates
- The AirPods Pro 2
- A mixed reality headset
- Many, Many Macs
Apple usually has a big launch event at the end of each year – usually around September – and we would normally see a lot of products showing up at the same time.
But given the length of that list, there’s no way everyone will show up at one event – unless they have five seconds of screen time each and Eminem has to announce – so they’ll likely show up at multiple events.
That’s not a total surprise – in 2020, the company had two launch events, one for iPads and Apple Watches and one for iPhones. Apple will likely have to repeat this in 2022 for all the products mentioned – or even have a third release. Gurman says some of the devices could arrive as early as 2023.
Either way, if there’s an iPhone 14 launch event and Gurman’s projections don’t come to fruition, that doesn’t necessarily mean these devices aren’t coming.
