We’ve been expecting to see the Apple Watch 8, Apple Watch SE 2, and Apple Watch Pro at Apple’s Far Out event tomorrow (September 7) for some time, but what we didn’t expect (we’re still hearing) is that there will be another model as well – one aimed at specifically for children.
This idea comes from a New York Times (opens in new tab) article that spends a lot of time talking about how parents are buying Apple Watch SE for their kids instead of a smartphone. But buried in the middle of it, in passing, it is claimed that an even cheaper smartwatch will be released by the company at its next event.
This statement was made by ‘two people involved with the project, who were not authorized to speak publicly’.
It’s a claim that may be true, but the idea that this is a wearable designed specifically for kids – as some websites are reporting – seems unlikely. In fact, it’s probably just the Apple Watch SE 2.
On the one hand, it seems unlikely that Apple was able to keep a model of the Apple Watch completely under wraps until a day before launch; so that in itself means that this last suggestion seems tenuous at best.
Also, while the article is focused on kids who use Apple Watches, the sources don’t say this one is specifically designed for kids – just that it’s cheap. In addition, Apple does not usually opt for children’s editions of its products.
We’re also not alone in thinking that an Apple Watch for kids is unlikely, as Mark Gurman – an established leaker and journalist with a great track record of Apple information – also said in a tweet (opens in new tab) that he doesn’t ‘believe there is a new, ultra-cheap child-focused watch, as some have said’.
Instead, Gurman argues that the Apple Watch SE 2 could simply be released at a lower price than the original Apple Watch SE, which seems much more believable.
Analysis: There’s already an Apple Watch for kids
Another thing to note is that Apple doesn’t need to make an Apple Watch aimed at kids – because, as the New York Times article essentially describes, the Apple Watch SE is already that. It’s affordable, and many parents are buying it for their kids.
You can already get colored straps for that too, and we can’t imagine Apple going for an overly childish design beyond that.
So if this report is correct, our guess is the same as Gurman’s – that they’re talking about the Apple Watch SE 2, but that it will be increasingly attractive as a kids’ gadget because it will cost less than the $279/£ 269 / AU$429 starting price of the original Apple Watch SE.
With leaks suggesting the SE 2 won’t be a major upgrade, a lower launch price is certainly believable.
