An unexpected show from HBO Max has just been crowned the biggest winner of the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The White Lotus, a comedy-drama anthology series that debuted on HBO Max in July 2021, stole the headlines with its astonishing five gongs at the 2022 awards ceremony. Fan-favorite shows like Ted Lasso and Succession should be the biggest winners of the night. Despite their more than 20 award nominations, though, the duo were defeated by the White Lotus gong quintet – Ted Lasso secured four and Succession winning three in comparison.
Unsurprisingly, Ted Lasso and Succession won some of the biggest awards of the night. The second season of Ted Lasso garnered wins in the categories of Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Directing. Meanwhile, Succession’s third season won awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series.
Even so, the duo were powerless to stop the White Lotus from winning the main 2022 Primetime Emmy awards ceremony. The underrated HBO Max series took home several other major awards, including Outstanding Limited Series or Anthology, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Series. Limited or Anthology and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology. The show’s creator – Mike White – also won wins for Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series or Anthology and Outstanding Directing in a Limited Series or Anthology.

What makes The White Lotus’ triumph even more impressive is that it had the highest proportion of awards and show nominations presented for the Emmys. With five wins out of 20 nominations, The White Lotus has garnered an excellent 25% nominee win ratio. On the other hand, Ted Lasso, the crown jewel in the Apple TV Plus original series lineup, has a 20% win rate (four wins out of 20 nominations), with Succession – one of HBO Max’s biggest hits – coming in second. behind with 12% wins (three wins out of 25 nominations).
Compared to shows on other streaming services, The White Lotus’ multi-award winning success at the 2022 Emmys is also not to be overlooked. Prime Video only managed one Emmy – Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, unexpectedly winning the Outstanding Competition Program category. Meanwhile, Netflix won just three Emmys on the night, one for Ozark and two for the global phenomenon Squid Game.
It seems, then, that there’s a new kid on the block when it comes to TV shows that a wider audience should check out. The White Lotus is its name, and upsetting the odds at one of the biggest awards ceremonies in the world is gambling.
Analysis: HBO Max is still the master of prestige TV
The White Lotus may have knocked Succession down a peg or two, but the duo’s 2022 Emmy success indicates that HBO Max is still the main light when it comes to prestige television.
With 12 wins across 25 major categories, HBO Max is by far the most decorated streaming service at this year’s ceremony. No other streamer has come close to matching its nearly 50% win rate, with Apple TV Plus second with a 16% win rate (four wins across the top 25 categories), Netflix third with a win rate 12% (three out of 25), and Hulu in fourth with a measly 8% win rate (two out of 25). The less said about Prime Video’s 4% win rate (one out of 25), the better. Still, at least it got one more gong than Paramount Plus or Peacock.
Disney Plus and Netflix might have the biggest subscriber bases, and Apple might get some of the biggest actors and directors – Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio, anyone? – for their original movies and TV shows. But when it comes to delivering on the award-winning front, HBO Max continues to praise its competitors.
The hit HBO Max sequel is likely to continue for the foreseeable future as well. Succession’s fourth season is currently in development, while the streamer has another big hit on his hands in House of the Dragon, a spin-off of his live-action adaptation of George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones fantasy novel series. Add in other popular titles like Barry, Euphoria, Hacks and now The White Lotus – all of which received 2022 Emmy nominations (and won a few in between) – and HBO Max’s dominance in the current golden age of streaming should continue.
The only thing that could ruin that is the recent merger of Warner Bros. with Discovery. The newly formed entertainment conglomerate plans to combine HBO Max with Discovery Plus, meaning a name change could be imminent as the two services are blended into one. If the HBO Max name is somehow not kept, audiences may be initially confused about where they can watch Succession, The White Lotus, and more. What if they think HBO Max no longer exists.
While Warner Bros. Discovery market its new streaming platform effectively, it should continue to assert dominance in the prestige TV scene. If you don’t, however, companies like Apple TV Plus, Netflix, and company can start to infiltrate your turf — especially from an award-winning perspective.
