Last June, messaging platform Telegram launched a premium service that offered a host of intuitive features for a monthly fee. It followed that up by revealing some features for premium users, including an infinite menu of infinite reaction emojis, as well as new profile emoji statuses.
And now, in what appears to be a desperate dice throw to make the premium service work, Telegram has reduced its monthly subscription fee in India from Rs 469 to Rs 179.
India is one of the main markets for Telegram, which has over 700 million monthly active users worldwide.
Telegram game plan
In India, Telegram lags behind Meta-owned WhatsApp, which has a subscription base of over 500 million. Telegram has around 120 million users. It launched its premium service across the world in an attempt to monetize its user base that grew after the WhatsApp privacy update fiasco last year. The premium offer comes with an option to organize chats better. Premium users can pin up to 10 chats to the main list, join up to 1000 channels and connect up to 4 accounts. Users also have the option to organize their chats into up to 20 folders, each with up to 200 chats.
The premium tier also increases the maximum file transfer size and allows users to transfer files up to 4GB in size compared to the previously available 2GB.
In case the recipient of this large file is on Telegram Premium, he will be able to download it faster as the premium tier does not limit the download speed of media and attached files. While it means that not only premium users can share large files, but people will also be able to download them instantly.
Premium subscribers are not subject to advertising on public channels and have access to exclusive animated reactions and premium stickers that are being updated regularly.
Word from the market is that its premium service hasn’t taken off the way it was intended. But Telegram sees potential for its premium offering in India. Thus, in a message sent to its users in the country, the platform announced the discount on subscription fees. This is for India only. For the record, Telegram Premium costs between $4.99 and $6 in other countries.
