MediaTek has unveiled an addition to its lineup of premium 5G chipsets designed to help the company compete on an equal footing at the higher end of the market. smartphone Marketplace.
The new Dimensity 9000+ SoC fits at the top of the MediaTek portfolio, grouping eight CPU cores based on Arm’s v9 architecture with an Arm Mali-G710 GPU.
As with the previous model, the chipset also has 8MB of L3 cache, 6MB of system cache, a high-performance modem, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, and an integrated APU for AI acceleration.
While the specs are virtually identical to the base Dimensity 9000, the new SoC is said to offer a material performance boost in both graphics and traditional workloads, thanks to the ability to run cores at higher clock speeds.
Historically, MediaTek has been in the somewhat less attractive portions of the mobile chipset market, delivering budget and mid-range phones aimed at users for whom performance is not necessarily a priority.
The launch of the Dimensity 9000 in December last year signaled a shift in strategy, which will see MediaTek try for the first time to pave the way for flashship mobile devices, a field traditionally dominated by Qualcomm.
At MWC 2022, Pro spoke with Pascal Lemasson and Rob Moffat, executives responsible for sales at MediaTek, who provided additional context on the company’s new approach and the importance of its new Dimensity chips.
“The strategy is to offer our customers chipsets from the bottom up. Before Dimensity 9000, we had a gap at the top,” said Moffat. “Over the past three years, our investment in R&D has been huge and 5G is a huge opportunity for us, so we made the decision to focus on the high-end market.”
“Ultimately, we need to focus on technology leadership, which automatically takes you to first-rate products.”
The arrival of the Dimensity 9000+, meanwhile, adds another string to the MediaTek bow, perhaps giving OEMs a tough choice to make when selecting a configuration for their upcoming flagships.
“Building on the success of our first 5G chipset, the Dimensity 9000+ ensures that device manufacturers always have access to the most advanced high-performance features and the latest mobile technologies, enabling their top-tier smartphones to stand out,” he said. The Doctor. Yenchi Lee, deputy general manager of wireless communications at MediaTek.
“With a top-notch AI, gaming, multimedia, imaging, and connectivity feature set, the Dimensity 9000+ delivers faster gameplay, seamless streaming, and a better user experience across the board.”
Smartphones based on the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ are expected to hit the market in the third quarter.
