Twitter was down – but the service has almost fully recovered

Update

Hey Twitter interrupt fans, John here replacing Mark so he can get something to eat. However, it looks like my time with you will be short-lived as things seem to be getting back to normal.

Twitter acknowledged the outage today, but your tweet looks like it came in a little late – where was this an hour ago, Twitter!?

We just laughed at a good joke from @Dadsaysjoke, so this can only mean one thing – Twitter is apparently back in action.

Downdetector reports have dropped to just over 1,500 in the UK and our US editor-in-chief made this celebratory tweet. All is well in the world again.

As Reddit discussed, the biggest fear when you see mass error messages on Twitter is that your account has been hacked or deleted. But fear not, the social network is simply experiencing its longest global outage for a while.

Naturally, there’s a lot of talk that the outage is related to the apparently troubled acquisition of Elon Musk. While Twitter is down, we are very open to conspiracy theories from elsewhere…

When there’s a big internet outage like this, the first place we usually turn to is… Twitter. The social network did not respond to our requests for comment, but the problems appear to be abating at least in the UK.

Interestingly, some members of the team found the site working again on desktop and mobile. But in the US, there are still big problems – resulting in fun error messages like this one.

Twitter’s major outage appears to be a fairly global issue, with spikes in issue reports in most countries. In the US, there have been 54,000 reports of Downdetector issues in the last few minutes – far more than the last time this happened in March.

It’s almost as big in the UK, though, with 27,000 stories there, reflecting the lunchtime frustration of those (ourselves included) who just wanted to snack on part of the UK’s latest political psychodrama.

If you’ve just joined Twitter, you’ve probably seen this message. The social network appears to be experiencing a major disruption, with reports on Downdetector continuing to show a large spike.

We’re reaching out to Twitter for official comments, but for now you’ll have to head to TikTok and Reddit for snacking on memes and hot-takes.

As we mentioned above, the issues with Twitter started in the early hours of the morning in the US and many in the UK were rolled over at lunchtime.

Outage tracking website DownDetector has shown a large increase in complaints, with users turning to other social media sites to report issues.
