A new split-screen multiplayer mod for the recently released adventure game Stray lets you befriend a feline friend.
After figuring out how to swap out Stray’s silent protagonist for their own pets, modders found another way to add even more cats to the game. Modder KangieDanie has released a split screen mode (opens in new tab) for the hit platform game, allowing you and your friends to play simultaneously as your own cats.
Being a mod, it only works on PC, so if you’re playing Stray on PS5 or PS4, unfortunately, you won’t be able to play with a cat friend. But on the plus side, console gamers can play Stray for free, so that’s something.
The mod only supports local co-op for now, but KangieDanie it says (opens in new tab) they know another modder is looking to create an online co-op mod in the future.

You can play using the same keyboard or connect another controller to navigate the city streets side by side. However, how many co-op players can be added using the mod is unclear, and even KangieDanie is unsure as they have run out of controllers to test. Current screenshots show up to three players in the game together.
The mod is still in early development, and KangieDanie highlighted some bugs you can expect to find. At the moment, only player 1 can see the game’s HUD, it may crash during level transitions, and you may see a handful of visual glitches during gameplay. All standard teething issues for a new mod.
Playing in co-op actually looks pretty easy, though. Once the mod is installed, go to the main menu and tap F9 on your keyboard to add a secondary player. It’s currently unclear if you can remove players once you’ve added them, so don’t get carried away.
To install the mod, you will need to download the main file and the accompanying split-screen setup, as well as the Unreal Engine Mod Loader. Follow these instructions as listed in the mod description to get everything up and running:
- Download the main mod and split-screen config files from the Nexus Mods page
- Drag the SplitScreenRequiredConfig_P.pak file to the ‘Paks’ folder in the Stray files directory
- Create a new folder called ‘LogicMods’ in the existing ‘Paks’ folder
- Drag the SplitScreenMod.pak file to this new folder
- download the latest UnrealModLoader (opens in new tab) and extract the zipped file anywhere on your PC
- Launch UnrealModLoader.exe
- launch Stray
